Can guinea pigs eat cucumbers. Guinea pigs need plenty of fiber. Cucumbers pose as a good vegetable choice as their skin is the most concentrated and fibrous part of it. Though not all seeds are good for them, cucumber is an exception. Cucumber seeds are safe for them to consume. Seeds of cucumber are very soft and moist so there is no chance of choking on anything. It also keeps them refreshed and they won’t feel dehydrated during the summer.

But despite these many health benefits, do not replace cucumbers with their regular diet of pellets and veggies.

You can give them the entire slice of a baby cucumber but you will need to make strips of the big cucumber. This vegetable is low in sugar which is good for them. It has high water content. It is also low in Vitamin C so avoid giving them in large quantities. Feeding it four times a week is good. It is a good feeding option during summers due to its high water concentration. But avoid too much also. Excess of it can lead to diarrhea and even vomiting. They have a very sensitive stomach so too much could result in bloating, weight loss, and other sicknesses too.

Can Guinea Pigs Eat Cucumber Peels And Skin

Yes, most certainly. But make sure that the skin doesn’t contain any wax or residues of pesticides. Otherwise, there is no harm and no need for peeling the skin of the cucumber. If you want to be more careful, peel the skin off.  But remember that majority of the nutrients are present within the skin. So give them in small quantities. Also, you can mix the cucumbers with other veggies to balance the diet.

A point to be noted is that do not replace cucumber slices with cucumber juice as they won’t be able to digest it properly leading to indigestion and an upset tummy.

Organic cucumbers would be a great option rather than the ones sold with pesticides on them. They are juicer and crunchy and these, pigs love them. One with pesticides can be harmful on many levels. At times, cucumbers might taste bitter. Avoid giving them those as such cucumbers have certain toxic substances which are very bad for the guinea pig’s health.

Clean up the cucumber that is leftover in the cage as bacteria can build upon it which is harmful to the pig’s health if they consume. Also do not give cucumber to a baby guinea pig. Introduce it only after it gets used to eating solid food.  

Cucumbers with their skin in short, are a good option, given in moderation, for guinea pigs to maintain a good and healthy digestive system.
